What is Ulthera or Ultherapy?

| More

Ulthera treatmentUlthera (also know and Ultherapy or Ulthera Therapy) is a non-surgical ultrasound based procedure for lifting and firming the sagging skin on your face and neck. Ulthera belongs to a new generation of face lifting procedures. The depth of the sound wave penetration makes it possible to target the layers of tissue, which could be previously addressed only by surgery. This factor makes it stand out from a broad variety of non-invasive anti-aging treatments such as Thermage, Titan, ReFirm and Accent.

What Makes Ulthera More Effective Than Other Treatments?

Ulthera provides micro-focused heating and vibration of both dermal and deep fibro-muscular layers of the skin. The method is based on DeepSee technology (similar to diagnostic ultrasound used for breast exam or pregnancy testing). The see-through capabilities of ultrasound wave enable doctors to evaluate the structures and tissue below the skin surface. The image is projected on the screen and the beam of heat energy can be precisely focused on areas most affected by sagginess.

The micro-targeted beam of heat (about 60 degrees Celsius for 20 mile-seconds) and vibration of ultrasound wave causes "injury " in deep tissues of the skin. The natural healing response of our body to the “injury” is contraction of tissue structures and initiation of a collagen building process. This makes Ulthera not only a tightening and lifting, but also a firming treatment for your skin.

What are the Ultera Benefits?

None of non-surgical face-lifting procedures can replace or provide results to be compared to a surgery, and Ulthera is not exclusion. However, the beauty of this procedure is in its natural, noticable rresult in improving sagging areas of your face, with no downtime and discomfort of the surgery. The treatment restores contours of the face, eliminates laxity of the skin and jumpstarts production of new collagen for a tightened and youthful look.

Improvements include a sleeker, more defined jawline and firm skin under the chin. It reduces the effects of a “turkey neck” and provides a neck lift. Tightening of the sagging skin on cheeks leads to smoothing folds from nose to mouth, from mouth to jaws, and lifts the drooping corners of the mouth. Tightening of skin on the forehead produces a brow lift, which in turn lifts the corners of the eyes and promotes an overall youthful appearance. The procedure improves texture and evens out the color of your skin. The uniqueness of the procedure is the ability to strengthen the deep skin structures from inside out.

If you are concerned about sagging and droopiness of any area of your face you will definitely benefit from this procedure. The Ulthera skin tightening is suitable for all skin types.

What To Expect During And After The Ulthera Treatment

The procedure involves some discomfort and may be painful moments, during the moments when the energy discharge is being delivered. The level of discomfort varies from patient to patient and can be minimized by use of painkillers and other medications advised by a practitioner. The treatment does not require any special preparations and typically takes only one treatment to get impressive results.

A full face and neck treatment session lasts 45-60 minutes. A treatment of lower face area and neck lasts for about 30 minutes and a treatment of any singular area at a time lasts between 15 to 30 minutes. There is no downtime for most patients and you will be able to return to your normal activities in about an hour. Some patients may experience slight redness and swelling after the procedure longer then others. Usually redness is gone in 2-4 hours and the swelling will be gone by next morning.

Some individuals are lucky to see the initial tightening and contracting immediately, but in general it takes 2-3 months (sometimes up to 6 months) to see full benefits of the procedure, as the process of building up new collagen is similar to building up muscles while exercising your body.  It is gradual, therefore it looks absolutely natural.

Ulthera Results, Side Effects and Costs

As a face-lift procedure Ulthera has been FDA approved in 2009, however the Ultrasound technology is being used in medical field for more than 50 years. It is well researched over the years and is known to be safe and beneficial in many applications. Best candidates for the Ulthera treatment are people in the age of 35 to 65, who seek ways to postpone or avoid surgery.

No negative side effects and unexpected complications had been reported. Rarely a person may experience slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to touch for the next few days up to a week. Less common post-treatment effects include bruising or numbness of some areas of the face. We are not talking of unpredictable side effects caused by lack of professional experience of a practitioner.

How Many Ulthera Treatments Do You Need and How Long Ulthera Results Last?

Ultherapy is a fairly new technology, which has been used in Asia and Israel for few years before it got FDA approval in US. Therefore no studies can provide reliable answers and exact evaluation of how long the effective results can last. As of today the reports from FDA clinical trails and physicians, who had been using Ulthera for over 2 years claim results lasting up to 1.5 year and more, and still show improvements compared to pre-treated conditions of the skin.

In most cases, only one Ulthera treatment provides significant improvements that last at least a year. Of course the gravity works against us and none of the anti-aging procedures you choose (even a face-lift) will give you permanent results - our skin still continues to age. Touch up yearly treatments may be a reasonable solution to maintain the results and keep up with the aging process.

Cost for Ulthera treatment depends on the state, city, doctor, etc. The main criteria is the size of treated area: upper, lower, full face or full face and neck. Our research shows that patients should expect to pay between $700 to $1,500 per area and from $2,500 to $4,500 for a full face and neck. Not being cheap, it’s still less expensive and user-friendly than a traditional face-lift.

Advantages of Ultherapy procedure:

  1. The ultrasound highly focused acoustic energy penetrates deeper under the skin surface than laser, radio frequency or infrared light waves and therefore tightens more layers of the skin.
  2. Acoustic imaging enables to evaluate conditions of soft tissue beneath the skin and increases the accuracy of the ultrasound wave impact.
  3. Ultrasound technology allows different levels of the skin to be treated simultaneously thus increasing the efficiency of the procedure
  4. Ulthera is safe, compatible and complimentary with laser and filler treatments since it affects the underlying structures, which are not involved in any of the other treatments

Ulthera Vs Thermage

Thermage was one of the first non-surgical systems that promised potential as a face lifting treatment. Thermage technology uses radio frequency and generates heat that works from the outer layers of the skin down to the underlying tissue.  Unlike Thermage, which seams disappointing to many doctors and patients, Ulthera uses ultrasound technology. It shows much better result than Thermage due to  to the deeper wave penetration, inside-out method and imaging capabilities of Ulthera. It allows a  more precise impact of the sagging parts of your face, therefore is more effective.

Ulthera is reported to have a significantly better result than all other device on today’s cosmetic market, which typically use radio frequency, infrared light or lasers to stimulate the skin.
